Guadalajara International Airport, code GDL, officially named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. It is the gateway to Jalisco's tequila country, about 30 to 45 minutes from central Guadalajara depending on traffic. From the city, Tequila town is another 60 km, roughly 70 minutes northwest, so you base in Guadalajara and day-trip out to the distilleries.
GDL is one of Mexico's busiest airports, with broad domestic and international connections, which makes it easy to reach from most US hubs. Once you land, the plan is simple: get into Guadalajara, sleep there, and treat Tequila as a day out. Why Not Puerto Vallarta Or Mexico City?
Because both are far worse placed for a Tequila day. Puerto Vallarta sits on the Pacific coast, a four to five hour drive from Tequila town, and Mexico City is several hundred kilometers east. Guadalajara International is the only airport within practical day-trip range of the distilleries, which is why every guided Tequila tour starts from Guadalajara, not the coast.
People book Puerto Vallarta by mistake because it is the better-known Jalisco name, then discover the distilleries are a full day's drive away over the mountains. How Do You Get From GDL Airport Into Guadalajara?
An authorized airport taxi or an app ride, about 30 to 45 minutes. Official airport taxis run on fixed zone fares you pay at a booth inside the terminal before you walk out, which removes any haggling on the curb. App-based rides are usually cheaper, though airport pickup rules shift, so check the app on arrival. A public bus also runs, slower and cheaper.
Where you stay matters more than how you get there. Base yourself in a central district like Centro, Chapultepec, or Americana, because that is where the tours pick up and where the nightlife, food, and the Tequila Plus bus terminal all sit. The airport is south of the city and Tequila is northwest, so a hotel in the middle keeps both legs short. Trying to run straight from the airport out to Tequila means skirting the whole metropolitan area first, which is why almost nobody does it in one hop.
How Do You Get From Guadalajara To Tequila?
Three ways: a guided tour with hotel pickup, the public Tequila Plus bus, or the Jose Cuervo Express train. A guided day is the simplest, door to door from your hotel. The Tequila Plus bus leaves from the Central Vieja downtown for around MX$130 to 170 each way, every 30 to 60 minutes. The Cuervo Express train runs Saturdays only and is an event in its own right.

No. Tequila town has no commercial airport and no scheduled flights serve it. The nearest option by a wide margin is Guadalajara International, and from there it is road or rail the rest of the way. Anyone selling a flight to Tequila means flying into GDL and continuing overland.
The one upside of that layout is the drive. The road northwest out of Guadalajara opens into blue agave fields rolling toward a low volcano, and the approach is part of the experience rather than dead time. Fly into GDL, settle in the city, and let the last 60 km be the scenic part of the day.
